Pirates must face debutants La Cure Waves of Mauritius in the first preliminary round. Should they advance, they will take on the winner of the clash between Mangasport of Gabon and African Stars of Namibia in the next stage.
If they win that tie, they will reach the group stages.
Sundowns have a bye through the first round and will await the winner of the tie between Wiliete of Angola and Foresters FC of Seychelles. They will, in all likelihood, face the Angolans.
The First Preliminary Round opening legs will be played from September 4-6, with the return matches scheduled for September 11-13.
The Second Preliminary Round will begin from October 16-18, before the decisive return legs are staged from October 23-25.
