All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard retires from the NFL after nine seasons

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Xavien Howard retired on Wednesday, according to the team.

Howard was placed on the reserved/retired list ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Howard spent all eight seasons of his career with the Miami Dolphins prior to signing with the Colts this season, where he played in only three games and recorded 11 tackles and a fumble recovery.

In nine years, Howard was a two-time All-Pro (2018, 2020) and four-time Pro Bowler. He led the league in interceptions twice (2018 - seven, 2020 - 10). In 2020, Howard also led the league in pass deflections (20), a season in which he also recorded a career-high 51 tackles. 

Howard finished his career with 342 tackles, 95 pass deflections, 29 interceptions, four forced fumbles, two sacks, and two touchdowns. 

During his prime, Howard was a top-three cornerback in the NFL. Now, the 32-year-old officially calls it a career.
