The Chicago Bears are reportedly closing in on hiring Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson (38) as their new head coach.

The Lions - who were the top seed in the NFC - fell in a shocking 45-31 home loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round game on Saturday, marking Johnson's last game as the team's OC.

The Bears succumbed to a last-place finish in the NFC North this season, despite beginning the campaign with four wins in their first six games. They eventually fired then head coach Matt Eberflus at the end of November after losing nine games in a row.

Detroit had the top-scoring offence in the NFL this season (33.2 ppg) and the number two overall offence. Johnson will be looking to improve a Bears team that had the joint fourth-fewest points per game (18.2).

Johnson became the Lions offensive coordinator in 2022 in which the team ranked in the top five in both scoring and overall the next three years under his watch.
