Spain will host its first-ever NFL game in 2025 with the Miami Dolphins announced as the home team on Friday for the game in Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

In a joint announcement from the NFL, Real Madrid - whose home will be used for the event - and the city's mayor Jose Almeida, the trio were excited at the prospect of bringing the league to the nation for its maiden match.

NFL's senior vice-president Brett Gosper told a press conference in Madrid: "The exciting first-ever game in Spain underscores the NFL's continued commitment to expand its global footprint and reach new audiences around the world.

"Bringing a historic franchise like the Dolphins to such an extraordinary and traditional ground like the Santiago Bernabeu stadium shows the global appeal of the NFL."

Spain becomes Europe's third country to host a regular-season game with UK capital London welcoming the league every year since 2007, whilst Germany's games started in 2022 with Frankfurt, Munich and, next year, Berlin all getting a chance to showcase NFL.

The international market for the league has pushed beyond those borders too with both Mexico and Brazil also hosting matches.

Like for any home team in the NFL, the Dolphins' traditional fanbase will miss out on one game in 2025 at the Hard Rock Stadium, with season ticket holders already notified in October. They are just one of two teams, the other being the Chicago Bears, who have market deals with the Iberian country.

The Dolphins finished this season with an 8-9 record, just missing out on the play-offs, but have won two championships in their history in the 1970s.

The NFL looks set to increase its international presence further in 2025 after clubs voted to approve an increase in international games from four contests to up to eight.

The play-offs for this season's competition continue this weekend with the Divisional Round, whilst the Super Bowl will be held on February 9th in New Orleans.
