The 2025 NFL Draft ended on Saturday as the New England Patriots drafted cornerback Kobee Minor with the 257th pick to become this year's Mr. Irrelevant.

The six-foot Senior out of the University of Memphis is just the third 'Mr. Irrelevant' cornerback in the tradition's history - the other two being Kalan Reed (Tennessee Titans, 2016), who was only in the league for two years, and Ramzee Robinson (Detroit Lions, 2007), who was out of the league after just three years.

The title hasn't held much success, unfortunately. Hence why San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is seen as such an anomaly.

So, who is Kobee Minor?

Born in Texas and the youngest of eight siblings, Minor is the son of former NFL player Darryl Minor, who played for the Washington Redskins in the 1980s.

Coming out of high school, Minor received offers from a handful of Division I programs, but Texas Tech, Iowa State, and California were the runaway top schools compared to the others.

He was a three-star recruit out of high school and 24/7 Sports' 110th-ranked safety in his recruiting class, despite posting 72 tackles, four tackles for loss, six pass deflections, five forced fumbles, and five interceptions his senior year.

Even earning First-team All-District honour in his junior year, Minor has been overlooked a lot throughout his career.

When asked about repping the title of Mr. Irrelevant, Minor was a great sport about it, saying, “I love it. I’ve never been a highly recruited guy.”

After accepting an offer from Texas Tech, where his brother, also named Darryl, like their father, played in 2019, Minor only played in one game for them prior to being redshirted as a freshman.

He then played his first full season (2021) as a Freshman for Texas Tech, recording just one tackle in 10 games and 12 tackles in 12 games with two pass deflections the following season (2022).

After transferring to Indiana in 2023, Minor started to show a little more signs of life on the stat sheet - recording 29 tackles and four pass deflections, going on to earn an All-Big 10 honourable mention.

However, Minor was a one-and-done with Indiana after head coach Tom Allen was fired. So, he ended up transferring to Memphis where he put up his best collegiate season as a fifth-year senior.

He recorded a career-high 38 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, two sacks, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles, which helped Memphis to an 11-2 record, the second time in program history with 11 wins.

Heading into the draft, he wasn't even given a profile on any of the league sites and didn't even receive a prospect grade.

And, given the history, the odds of Minor having success are certainly not in his favour. But whether he becomes something at the cornerback position or even on special teams, Minor can prove to everyone that he's anything but "irrelevant."

"I've never been one of the top guys," said Minor. "So, really, this isn't anything new to me. I'm going to just go out here and do what I got to do, put my head down and grind, like I've always have."
