Swedish double Olympic pole vault champion Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his existing world record by a centimetre on Sunday as he cleared 6.28 metres at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting.

Duplantis set his sights on breaking the world record on home soil for the first time, and warmed up for the attempt by winning the event as the only man to clear six metres.

After first-time clearances of 5.60, 5.70 and 5.90, Duplantis then saw off Australia's Kurtis Marschall at the next height to maintain his record of winning all men's pole vault events in this season's Diamond League.

With victory guaranteed, Duplantis had the bar set 28cm higher, and cleared it to break the world record for the 12th time as he soared over the bar at the first attempt to improve on his 6.27m effort in February.

The bar stayed in position, cueing wild celebrations from both the Swede and the home crowd at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium.
