Holly Harris and Jason Chan were the first pair to represent Australia at an Olympic ice dancing event in more than a decade and qualified for a secondary program with their results.

Chan and Harris finished 18th in the ice dance with a score of 67.75, well behind the 90.18 of French winners Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry, but their top-20 finish earned them a place in Wednesday's free skate program, which will allow them for a longer and less restricted routine.

When we hit our finishing pose, we were really happy with how we skated and I think we need to stay with that feeling,” Chan said after Monday's dance.

‘I’m really looking forward to skating the free ... It feels like a privilege to be out there and get that opportunity, and we’ve really worked hard on developing the program with a lot of new details and moments.”

We’re happy with the performance, and we qualified which is what we set out to do,” Harris added.

“I don’t think the scores were what we were looking for but that’s out of control and we couldn’t have skated a lot better.”

The other focal point of Monday night's program from an Australian perspective was the women's big air snowboarding competition, in which Tess Coady (seventh) and Meila Stalker (tenth) missed the podium but nonetheless put up respectable efforts.

We could almost claim a medal of sorts at the event with Sydney-born Zoi Sadowski-Synnott taking out the silver medal under the New Zealand flag!

Looking ahead to tonight, there's some cross country skiing at primetime, but the one we're most excited about will be short track speed skater Brendan Corey looking to emulate Steven Bradbury's heroics of 2002.
