Danish Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen got revenge for his recent defeat in Malaysia and secured his first title of the year when he defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong 21-16, 21-8 in the Super 750 India Open final.

In the 2024 edition, Axelsen also reached the final in India Open only to lose to world No.1 Shi Yuqi in straight games.

Axelsen had qualified for the final by beating Indonesia's Jonatan Christie in a three-set-thriller 17-21, 21-14 and 21-15.

Less than two weeks ago, Lee Cheuk Yiu otherwise gave Axelsen a poor start to the year by sending the Olympic gold medalist out in the first round in Malaysia.

It is the third time in his career that Axelsen won the title, but you have to go back to 2019 to find his latest triumph in New Delhi.

Axelsen fell behind 2-6 in the beginning of the match, where the 31-year-old struggled to execute his gameplan. However, Axelsen soon recaptured his composure and energy and at the break, the Dane was ahead 11-8.

From then on Axelsen seized control of the match and despite a weak attempt from Lee Cheuk Yiu to lanch a comeback, Axelsen held on to take the first set.

Momentum often shifted in a match where the spectators occasionally witnessed world class badminton, and it was only margins that in several cases decided the duels.

Fortunately for Axelsen, they mostly fell out in his favor as Lee Cheuk Yiu gradually struggled to find the lines.

Constantly having to chase the game, Lee Cheuk Yiu began to lose faith which proved constly against the susperior Axelsen who never looked back to secure yet another trophy
