"My journey ends here. Thank you all, because in one way or another, you have also been a part of it. In the new chapter, I will always carry with me the values that have guided me until now, and I will try to give back to society everything that it has given me over the years. It has been an amazing journey", she writes on Instagram.
Carolina Marin was supposed to take part in the European Championship on home soil in her hometown of Huelva, where the European Championship will be played in an arena that is even named after the Spanish star.
She was planning to end her career "by winning the European Championship in 2026", but that is not going to happen, as injuries have now forced her to end her career.
Marin has won the World Championships three times in 2014, 2015, and 2018, has seven European Championship gold medals, and she also won Olympic gold in 2016.
In 2024, she was on course for another Olympic final, but a nasty cruciate ligament injury ended her adventure.
It was the third cruciate ligament injury in Marin's career, and she underwent surgery again for knee problems most recently in February, this time for a meniscus injury.
