Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (35) is heading to the injured list with an "upper-extremity" blood clot close to his shoulder.

The team placed Wheeler on the 15-day IL.

Wheeler was having a Cy Young-esque season this year, posting a 10-5 record with a stellar 2.71 earned run average. The Phillies' ace leads the league in strikeouts (195) in 149.2 innings pitched heading into Saturday's action.

Wheeler's 0.94 WHIP is also the best in the National League (fourth overall) while his .197 opponents' batting average is tied for fourth best in all of baseball.

The three-time All-Star was the runner-up for last year's National League Cy Young Award, marking the second time (2021) in his career he almost earned the award.

Being on the 15-day IL means he will miss possibly three starts with 39 more games to go in the season.

Philly currently sits atop the National League East division with a 70-53 record, the second-best in the NL. But will need Wheeler if they want to make a World Series run during the postseason.

The team will wrap up their series with the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
