The San Diego Padres and pitcher Michael King (29) agreed to a one-year deal on Friday to avoid arbitration.

King is now set to earn $7.75 million this upcoming season with a $15 million mutual option in 2026. The new deal also includes a buyout valued at $3.75 million, which can reach up to $4 million depending on how many starts King reaches this year.

King threw an impressive 2.95 ERA in 30 starts last season for the Padres. His 173.2 innings and 201 strikeouts were both career-highs, which led him to finish seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

The six-year veteran will now be heading into his seventh season with the possibility of being on a new team if recent trade rumours come through.

King has thrown a sub-3.00 ERA the past three seasons along with a strikeouts per nine innings above 10.0. Batters his .221 last season against King with a .346 slugging percentage in back-to-back seasons.
