RB Leipzig ended the weekend in fifth place in the Bundesliga after being held to a 2-2 draw by VfL Wolfsburg, who didn’t do much to quell their fears of relegation as they failed to keep a clean sheet for the 14th successive league match.

Bouncing back from defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal in the week was an expectation for Leipzig, who were dominant in the first half despite being unable to trouble the scoreboard.

Wolfsburg’s only chance of the first 45 minutes came early on when Christian Eriksen’s effort from distance dipped over, before Kamil Grabara made his first save of many at the other end when Yan Diomande powered on target from a tight angle.

The Polish stopper’s saves kept coming, as he denied Conrad Harder’s overhead kick, as well as a close-range effort from Brajan Gruda in a stunning first-half performance.

Grabara made another save following the break to deny Diomande after a brilliant first touch and effort on the turn, again keeping his side in it and providing them with the springboard to take the lead.

On the counter, Adam Daghim twisted and turned his way into the area and laid it off for Wolfsburg's top-scorer Mohamed Amoura, who struck it high into the far top corner.

Leipzig were the only Bundesliga side yet to previously salvage a point from a losing position this season, but they suddenly restored parity when Grabara finally made a mistake in giving it away cheaply to Gruda, who shifted it on for Diomande to slot inside the near bottom corner.

But the hosts didn’t remain on level terms for long, as they were stunned again on the break when Jeanuel Belocian marauded down the left and played in Mattias Svanberg, who buried his finish past Maarten Vandevoort into the far corner.

Leipzig hardly troubled in the aftermath, and Wolfsburg looked to be cruising to victory, but the visiting defence switched off with just a couple of minutes remaining and allowed Gruda to set himself and curl a left-footed shot into the far corner from the edge of the area.

The only draw of the Bundesliga matchday, the result is not what either manager would have been hoping for, especially for Wolfsburg, who led for so much of the second half.

They’ve now failed to win all of their nine matches against current top-seven sides this season, while Leipzig finally get something after going behind in the league and just about keep their run of 13 unbeaten in Sunday Bundesliga matches going.
