The Calgary Flames signed Mikael Backlund to a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension on Wednesday, keeping him on the team through the 2028-2029 season.

The 36-year-old has spent all 17 seasons of his career with the Flames. He'll eventually reach an official 20 seasons once his new deal is played out.

"We're so excited as a family, we're thrilled to stay here," said Backlund. "It's been a great ride, and we're so proud to be Calgarians and I'm proud to be a Calgary Flame. So, we're very thankful we got this deal done."

Backlund posted 15 goals and 17 assists in 76 games during 20224-2025, making it the third straight year the center has scored at least 15 goals or more.

He is currently second on the all-time games played list (1,066) for the franchise, falling 153 games short of Flames legend Jerome Iginla (1,219). Backlund would need to average at least 51 games throughout the rest of his extension to surpass him.

The good news - Backlund hasn't played less than 50 games since the 2012-2013 season (32).

Calgary legend would also need 15 more goals to jump into fifth all-time for the franchise, surpassing Kent Nilsson (229).

Their Flames start their season in a Battle for Alberta against the Edmonton Oilers on October 8th.
