Michael van Gerwen is a semi-finalist at the World Darts Championship for the ninth time in his career. In a high-quality quarter-final against Callan Rydz, it was the three-time world champion who managed to win 5-3.

Callan Rydz started the match as the better player and broke Van Gerwen in his first leg, but the Dutchman hit back with a 154 finish.

With a chance to win the set at 2-1, Rydz missed a dart on tops, which meant Van Gerwen was able to break back again and level the score.

A final high-level leg saw Van Gerwen almost take out 130, but the Dutchman missed double five. Rydz almost responded with a 113 finish, but Van Gerwen eventually took the first set.

However, Rydz opened the second set with a bang, taking out 138. Later in the set, with a chance for a fourteen darter, 'the Riot' lost his chance to win the set. However, Van Gerwen also missed on tops and Rydz took his first set of the match.

Again, Rydz broke Van Gerwen at the start of a set, but in keeping with the theme of the match, the Dutchman hit right back.

In leg four, Van Gerwen had the chance to win the set, but Van Gerwen struggled at tops - his ninth attempt at the double 20 went wrong, meaning the Dutchman was 1 from 9. Rydz retained his own leg, but then saw Van Gerwen do the same from 68, winning his second set.

The rollercoaster of Callan Rydz

Rydz grabbed the first leg of the fourth set, but started to drop a bit in level and had more trouble keeping up with Van Gerwen's pace. Despite this, Rydz took a 2-1 lead before sealing the set.

The fifth set promised to deliver fireworks and it did: both players averaged well over 100 and jointly threw 13 140+ throws. Van Gerwen and Rydz fought a grandiose duel, but it was the former who won it.

Van Gerwen dealt a massive blow to Rydz and broke the Englishman at a crucial moment in the match. In the third leg of the sixth set, Van Gerwen gained a big lead and managed to make it 2-1. The final leg again went the Dutchman's way and Van Gerwen remained relentless on the doubles. An average of 108.71 was simply too much for Rydz.

Van Gerwen opened the potentially final set with six perfect darts, and took the first leg. With the pressure on Rydz, the Englishman won his own leg and then broke Van Gerwen with a handsome 70 finish.

Rydz had an ideal chance to tip the match and started the leg that could give him the set win with three perfect darts. However, Van Gerwen kept himself in the leg, but Rydz actually came back and clinched the set.

The two continued to string together 180s and made it a spectacular duel in Ally Pally. With the chance to break Rydz in the third leg, Van Gerwen couldn't checkout 130. From 72, Rydz would get one arrow to claim the leg, which he did.

The men were on their way to a record number of 180s for a World Cup quarter-final, with Van Gerwen taking it to a final leg.

Rydz had to chance to take it to a final set, but failed to take out 92. Van Gerwen needed two darts for the double 18 to win the match, which he eventually did, leading to wild celebrations.

Callan Rydz misses out on a match against cousin Chris Dobey in the semi-finals, losing to Michael van Gerwen after a match with as many as 31 180s and an average of 103 for both players.
