Venezia headed into this game in dire need of a victory to aid them in their battle against the drop. However, it was Genoa who unsurprisingly went close to taking the lead after 10 minutes. The Griffin tested the resolve of Ionuț Radu from a corner, when Andrea Pinamonti rose highest to head goalwards but the goalkeeper showed incredible reflexes to palm the effort away.
Following that early opportunity, both sides struggled to create a clear goalscoring opportunity, with the best opportunity coming for the visitors with just under half an hour played.
Gaetano Oristanio received the ball from a throw-in before hitting a left-footed shot towards goal, but it was a tame effort that was gathered easily by Nicola Leali.
The winged Lions went close again before the break through Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, as the midfielder struck towards goal from distance only to be denied by a stunning save from Leali, that prevented the ball from flying into the roof of the net.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with Patrick Vieira’s side threatening to take the lead.
But yet again the Griffins were struggling to find a way past Radu. But the Romanian stopper made yet another brilliant save with just under an hour on the clock, as he denied Pinamonti once again. This time the forward struck a venomous volley towards the inside of the left post from just inside the penalty area, only to see it punched away.
Genoa did manage to eventually break the deadlock as the game entered its closing stages, as Pinamonti finally managed to get the better of Radu, bending an exquisite strike into the top-right corner after receiving a pinpoint pass from Caleb Ekuban.
The hosts weren’t done there though, firing a second in with just four minutes remaining. Maxwel Cornet was the man who found the net after yet another fine pass from Ekuban and found the forward before he kept his cool to slot the ball into the left side of the goal.
Vieira’s men held on to secure three points, lifting them to 11th in the Serie A table. Meanwhile, Venezia’s battle against the drop continues to get increasingly tougher, with Eusebio Di Francesco’s side now sitting five points adrift of safety.
