Denmark bid farewell to Herning in style as they maintained their perfect record in the World Cup tournament by beating the Czech Republic 28-22 despite taking their foot slightly off the gas in a match where the hosts had already secured their ticket to the quarterfinals before the match.

Having already secured their access to the next stage of the tournament, the Danes struggled to get into their usual stylish stride in the beginning of the match against a sturdy Czech defence where goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva did a great job, with nine saves and a 45% saving efficiency before the break, including two penalties.

This prompted a furious rant during a timeout from Danish coach Nikolaj Jacobsen to spur his players on while a sold out Jyske Bank Boxen with 8.000 spectators also did their best to get the hosts going.

Luckily for Denmark, Emil Nielsen, who had recorded 23 saves in the previous match against Tunisia, had a 50% saving efficiency, which helped Denmark to a 12-10 lead at the interval.

The Czechs did their best to limit the damage and generally put in a fine performance against the much favored Danes but midway through the second half Denmark started pulling away and in the end the Danish win was never in danger.

Mathias Gidsel was voted Player of the Match and received the award from former teammates Niklas Landin and Mikkel Hansen who retired from the national team after the Olympic games.
