Norway as expected went on to win the final of the Women's Handball World Championships but were surprisingly made to fight for it all the way against a resilient German side who limited the Norwegian win to 23-20.

The Norwegian women's handball team will once again have to expand their trophy cabinet after they on Sunday afternoon won the World Championships as expected.

The fifth World Championship title was secured with a 23-20 victory over a resilient German side, who on paper were not expected to have much of a chance.

But Germany delivered a top-level performance and managed to put maximum pressure on Norway in a final where the final result wasn't decided until the last five minutes.

It was Germany's first final at a major championship since 1994 and the first final at the World Championship since 1993 where they prevailed against Denmark.

The silver medal is Germany's first final round medal since 2007.

Norway was the big favorite to take the gold home to Oslo, which also became a reality despite a difficult start in the arena in Rotterdam.

The Germans caught the Norwegians cold in the beginning of the match and enjoyed a two-goal gap through parts of the first half but Ole Erevik's side managed to restore parity shortly before the interval (11-11).

In the second half, the Norwegian stars seemed to have the most energy left in the tank but the favourites didn't manage to create the decisive gap until the last five minutes.

Denmark lost in the quarter-final to France, who won the World Cup bronze medal earlier on Sunday.

The French women's handball team won 33-31 over the Netherlands in the third-place match after extra time.
