The Colorado Avalanche took Game 1 of their series against the Dallas Stars by a score of 5-1 after a high-intensity matchup on Saturday night.

The first period of the matchup had its nail-biting moments, but nothing came out of it.

The Avalanche outhit (18-7) and outshot (11-8) the Stars while both teams failed on their respective power plays, leaving the highlights to both teams' goaltenders in Mackenzie Blackwood (COL) and Jake Oettinger (DAL).

It wasn't until the second period that things got a little more exciting.

Second Period

Artturi Lehkonen scored the first goal of the game as Colorado went up 1-0.

The goal, assisted by Nathan MacKinnon, came after Lehkonen kicked the puck in mid-air, which was later ruled unintentional and confirmed a goal with 10:30 to go in the second.

Seven minutes later, MacKinnon scored a goal of his own on the Avalanche power play.

Third Period

Dallas finally got on the board with just four seconds left during a power play with 13:15 to go in the third after Blackwood's stick got stuck in the net.

Unfortunately, it would be their only goal of the night as Blackwood was a brick wall for most of the game.

The third period was all Avalanche which left Stars fans exiting the arena with two minutes to go.

Devon Toews scored a beautiful tip-in shot originally set up by Josh Manson to go up 3-1 with 7:04 left in the period.

MacKinnon went on to score his second goal of the night with an empty-netter to go up 4-1 with 3:08 left.

Then Charlie Coyle poured some more salt in the wound just 11 seconds later to put the Avs up 5-1 as the final score.

Both teams finished the game with 24 shots on goal while the Avs outhit the Stars 30-18.

Game 2 between the Avalanche and Stars will take place on Monday, April 21st.
