NHL roundup: Blues dominate the Winter Classic, Cam Fowler scores twice in 1,000th game

The St. Louis Blues wrap up the year with emphasis after taking down the Blackhawks 6-2 in this year's NHL Winter Classic, improving to 3-0-0 in the traditional game.

Newly acquired defenseman Cam Fowler (3) scored two goals in his 1,000th game as the Blues (18-17-4) took home this season's Winter Classic from the Chicago Blackhawks (12-24-2), who have now lost all five Winter Classics they've been in. 

Justin Faulk (2), Dylan Holloway (14), and Alexandre Texier (3) all scored for the Blues on Tuesday night while Taylor Hall (8) and Tyler Bertuzzi (12) scored for Chicago. St. Louis had 12 players with at least one point while goaltender Jordan Binnington put up 28 saves.

The 2024 Winter Classic in St. Louis marked the NHL's second sold-out game at Wrigley Field.

Avalanche 5-2 Jets

The Avs (23-15-0) cooled off the Jets (27-11-1) as they won their league-leading fifth straight win. The Jets tied it up 2-2 in the second period then the Avs unleashed three straight goals in the third to take home the win. 

Artturi Lehkonen (14), Devon Toews (2), Casey Mittelstadt (8), Mikko Rantanen (21), and Ross Colton (11) all scored for Colorado while Rasmus Kupari (3) and Gabriel Vilardi (18) put the two in the net for Winnipeg. 

Red Wings 4-2 Penguins

Red Wings (15-18-4) have now won two straight after losing their previous four games thanks to goals from Jonatan Berggren (5), Patrick Kane (7), J.T. Compher (5), and Dylan Larkin (13). Drew O'Connor (5) scored both goals for the Penguins (17-17-5). 

The Red Wings have now won the season series (2-1) against the Penguins for the 2024-2025 season. 

Around the league

The Toronto Maple Leafs (23-13-2) are back in the win column after a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders (14-17-7) while the Montreal Canadiens (17-17-3) score three straight to take home a 3-2 over the Vegas Golden Knights (25-9-3), extending their win streak to three games. 

The Anaheim Ducks )15-17-4) hold off the New Jersey Devils (24-13-3) for a 3-2 upset while the Dallas Stars (22-13-1) put to rest the Buffalo Sabres' (14-20-4) three-game win streak by a score of 4-2.

The Philadelphia Flyers (17-17-4) shut out the San Jose Sharks by a score of 4-0. The Sharks have now lost an NHL-worst eight straight games and possess the worst record (11-23-6).  

Minnesota wins a wild one thanks to Marco Rossi's two goals, beating the Nashville Predators 5-3
