The Washington Capitals got things started on Sunday's 10-game slate with an emphatic win over the Edmonton Oilers largely in part to Alexander Ovechkin's hat-trick as he is now 13 goals away from breaking Gretzy's all-time goals record.

After the Oilers got on the board first thanks to Leon Draisaitl's league-leading 42nd goal, The Capitals answered as if they had a personal grudge against Edmonton as they scored five straight goals - two of which came from Ovechkin back-to-back.

Even though Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (16) and Jeff Skinner (11) tried to gain some ground on the Caps, it was all lost hope after Ovechkin nailed the empty netter, and his 29th of the season, to seal the 7-2 win. The hat trick marks Ovi's 32nd of his career.

The Caps have now scored a whopping 15 goals in the past two games coming out of the 4 Nations Face-Off break, extending their gigantic point lead (14) over the rest of the Eastern Conference with a 38-11-8 record.

Their now +65 point differential is the second most in the NHL behind the league's best Winnipeg Jets (+69).

Devils 5-0 Predators

New Jersey Devils goaltender Nico Daws was a brick wall in net for the team in Sunday's win over the Nashville Predators. The shutout marks Daws' first of his career and it came at the helm of a whopping 29 saves.

The netminder has only played three games this year but has now won both of his starts, with the last coming against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-2 win where Daws had 27 saves.

Stars 4-3 Islanders

Ovi wasn't the only one with a hat trick on Sunday, as Dallas Stars' forward Jason Robertson scored three of his own en route to the teams' win against the Islanders

This now marks Robertson's fourth career hat-trick as the Stars have now won two straight out of the 4 Nations Face-Off break, three in total, and are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.

Red Wings 5-4 Ducks

The Red Wings held off a resilient Ducks team as Patrick Kane scored the game-win, and his second of the game, to give Detroit their first win out of the break in Sunday's lone overtime matchup.

Detroit got out to a big three-goal lead in the first, but Anaheim scored four of the game's next five goals to send it to overtime. Unfortunately for them, one of the best goalscorers over the past decade plays for the Red Wings.

The Red Wings have now played in back-to-back overtime games (lost to Dallas 5-4 on Saturday) and are 8-1-1 in their last 10.

Around the league

The Tampa Lightning struck down the Seattle Kraken 4-1 thanks to goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy's 36 saves. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues calmed down the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-1 show, marking their first win out of the break.

Over at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers got the best of the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 thanks to goals scored by 4 Nations Team USA members JT Miller (12) and Adam Fox (5).

The Toronto Maple Leafs took down the abysmal Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 while the Calgary Flames slid by the league's worst San Jose Sharks in a close 3-2 battle.

Utah Hockey Club closed out the Sunday slate with a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks after a late power-play goal by Dylan Guenther (21).
