The Carolina Hurricanes took Game 4 away from the Washington Capitals on Monday night to take a 3-1 series lead as it heads back to Washington for a possible elimination game.

After their 5-2 win over the Capitals, the Canes have now won back-to-back games by at least three goals or more.

Carolina has outscored the Caps 12-4 this series as they continued to roll their way to another dominant win in Game 4.

So let's break it down by period and go over the highlights!

1st Period

Another game, another rough star for the Capitals after they let up a goal to Shayne Gostisbehere 10 minutes into the first.

The goal was Ghost's third of the playoffs and second of this series alone.

Carolina finished the first outshooting the Caps 13-7 while both teams were even in hits with 10 apiece.

After not scoring a goal during the first, the Capitals have now gone four straight periods without scoring a single goal.

After failing on their first two power plays, the Capitals finished the period with 25 seconds left on their third of the night.

2nd Period

The failures kept piling up as the Caps failed to score on their third power play of the night that rolled over from last period into this one.

But shortly after it ended, to add insult to injury, Seth Jarvis scored just 1:05 into the period to put the Canes up 2-0.

The Caps' only saving grace from this period was killing off two of the Canes' power plays.

Besides that, it marked five straight periods, going back to Game 3, without scoring a single goal.

Carolina continued to outshoot the Capitals 12-7 in the second period while both teams headed into the second intermission with 61 combined hits (WAS-33, CAR-28).

3rd Period

With the Caps on the verge of becoming the only team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to be shut out twice in the same series, Jakob Chychrun cut the lead for Washington with a goal, his third of the playoffs, just over five minutes into the third.

But the Caps were quick to give up another goal just as they were to score one.

Taylor Hall had a breakaway chance for the Canes and made sure to take advantage of the opportunity to put the Canes up 3-1 with over 11 minutes to go.

With just 8:03 remaining on the game clock and 1:15 remaining on their current power play, the Caps then went up to a two-man advantage after back-to-back penalties by the Hurricanes.

And who else but Alexander Ovechkin to give the Caps their second goal as they cut the lead 3-2 just 17 seconds into the 5-on-3 power play, his first goal of the series.

But in typical fashion, the Canes responded with a goal of their own after killing off the second Caps power play, making it their third two-goal lead of the night.

Sean Walker scored his first goal of the playoffs and earned his second point of the game (assist on the Hall goal).

The Caps went with the empty-net with under three minutes to go and the Canes took advantage of that right away as well.

Andrei Svechnikov scored his seventh goal of the playoffs as the Hurricanes took Game 4 with a 5-2 win, winning both games on home ice, looking to take the series in DC.

Carolina finished the game with 37 shots on goal to Washington's 21. The Caps have now been outshot in all four games this season.

Washington went 1-for-5 on the power play in Game 4, making it 2-for-12 in the series.

Game 5 between the Hurricanes and Capitals will take place in Washington, D.C, on Thursday, May 15th.
