The Dallas Stars were all about their business in their 6-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 5 on Monday night.

They are now the first team in the Western Conference to earn their third win of the playoffs, in a West bracket that was all tied up 2-2 from top to bottom, in comparison to the East where it's all 3-1 series.

1st period

Even though the Avalanche may have dominated on the stat sheet for the first period, it was all Stars in the first period.

And it started just nine seconds into the game when Wyatt Johnston put one home for the fastest playoff goal in Stars history.

Both teams exchanged power plays, one after the other failing to score but with great saves all around from Mackenzie Blackwood and Jake Oettinger.

Things got chippy after Stars defenceman Lian Bichsel cross-checked Avs forward Logan O'Connor to the ice a few times in front of the net with 4:40 left.

But Dallas poured on another one with 44 seconds left, this one from Thomas Harley, assisted by Johnston, that bounced up off the post and down Blackwood's back.

2nd period

Despite a lively first period, a five-goal second period just showed how insane the Stanley Cup Playoffs can truly be.

Just 1:12 in the period, Mikko Rantanen put the Stars up 3-0 with his first goal of the playoffs.

And just when you think the Stars have all the momentum, the Avs battle back with a pair of goals of their own within two minutes.

Artturi Lehkonen put up the first score for the Avs with 7:49 left in the period. It would be his second goal of the series despite not scoring once in the team's final 16 games of the regular season.

Soon after Lehkonen's goal, Nathan MacKinnon ripped a laser of his own to shorten Dallas' lead to 3-2. This one marked MacKinnon's fifth goal of the series and the most of any player in the playoffs.

But with four minutes left in the second, Colorado's Sam Malinski got called for a two-minute elbowing minor that put the Stars on the power play - and they made sure to capitalise.

With almost 50 seconds gone in the power play, Johnston scored his second goal of the game to make 4-2 - also earning his third point of the night.

But Dallas made sure to let Colorado know that bad things come in threes as Mason Marchment sent one home with 1:28 left in the period.

Both teams were almost dead even in shots on goal (COL-17, DAL-18) yet the Stars lit the way to the net.

3rd period

The Avalanche benched Blackwood to start the period as backup Scott Wedgewood was brought in. A trend we saw yesterday after the Jets also benched goaltender Connor Hellebuyck after letting up five goals in their loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Dallas went on a power play with 14:33 in the period after a questionable high stick penalty was called where it looked like Stars captain Jamie Benn skated into Josh Manson's skate.

Avs went on the power play after Bichsel got called for a minor cross-checking call almost 10 minutes into the period.

But thing continued to get chippy 15 second into it after a lot of bumping around the front of the Stars' net that led to MacKinnon slapping Oettinger with his stick. The scrum led to a minor penalty for the Avs' Lehkonen and the Stars' Esa Lindell.

After Roope Hintz scored the empty-netter for the Stars to extend the lead to 6-2, 10 game misconducts were handed out between both teams after players on the ice dropped the gloves with 1:02 left in the game.

The series now heads to Colorado for Game 6 on Thursday, May 1st, where the Stars will look to advance while the Avs will try to force a Game 7.
