The NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Friday that New York Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin has been suspended for one game after cross-checking Pittsburgh Penguins forward Connor Dewar.

The $20,000 fine given to Drouin will be donated to the NHL's Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. New York will be without Drouin for their game against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, October 11th.

His five-minute major penalty was assessed with just 15 seconds left in the season opener after players from both teams started to get physical in front of the net. He received a game misconduct as part of the penalty.

The 30-year-old veteran also scored earlier in the game with an assist from rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer to tie it up 1-1.

Pittsburgh would eventually go on to win the matchup 4-3.

New York signed Drouin to a two-year, $8 million deal after posting 11 goals and 26 assists in 43 games for the Colorado Avalanche last season.
