Brazil only managed two hits in their final game of the tournament. They finished without a single win (0-3), losing their first game to Team USA 15-5, then to Italy 8-0, and now to Mexico 16-0. Lucas Ramirez, son of legendary Boston Red Sox player Manny Ramirez, led them with two home runs and two RBI.
Mexico's 16 runs on 16 hits, including four home runs, eclipse the previous tournament high of 15 runs that was previously set by their Pool group rival in the USA.
As for Mexico, after hitting they're now 2-0, along with Italy and the U.S., in their Pool B group. With Brazil and Great Britain eliminated, it'll come down to those three to see which two advance to the next round.
Their next matchup is against the USA on March 9th at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Recap and highlights
Mexico got things started quickly in the first inning, going up 2-0.
After a double from Randy Arozarena, Jonathan Aranda drilled a frozen rope that bounced off the right field wall (watch here), coming up just short of a home run, which scored Arozarena from second to go up 1-0.
Right after, catcher Alejandro Kirk launched one to deep left center that also looked like a potential home run, but bounced high off the wall to bring in Aranda from second to make it 2-0.
The damage wouldn't stop. Mexico continued to pour it on after Brazilian Eric Pardinho intentionally walked Rowdy Tellez to force a potential double play. It ultimately failed when Nacho Alvarez Jr. grounded into a force out, leaving runners on the corners with just two outs.
Nick Gonzales took advantage and hit a blooper between first and second to score Kirk from third to go up 3-0.
Mexico eventually made it 4-0 before the end of the inning after a close play at the plate on an RBI-single from Alek Thomas.
During the second inning, Mexico would extend their lead to 5-0 with a solo home run from Jarren Durran, his first of the tournament. Two innings later, Durran would hit a two-run double, also his first of the tournament, to extend the lead to 7-0.
He finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate, putting up a double, home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In that same inning, Kirk would get a hold of one and launch his first home run of the tournament to extend the lead to 10-0.
Mexico's star catcher would finish the contest going 2-for-3 at the plate with a single, home run, four RBI, and two runs.
It would go up to 16-0 following a wild pitch, and Alexis Wilson RBI double, a two-run home run from Alek Thomas, and a two-run home run from Julian Ornelas.
The game would enforce the mercy rule after six innings, sending Mexico undefeated into their matchup against their rival Americans.
