Porto at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup: All you need to know

The newly formatted 2025 Club World Cup takes place in the USA this summer, and FC Porto are one of 12 European teams and one of two Portuguese teams who qualified to participate. The tournament starts on Saturday, June 14th and runs for five weeks until the final on Sunday, July 13th.

Below we have all the details on Porto’s involvement in the 2025 Club World Cup, with details on their fixtures, opponents, where to watch and more.

Schedule, fixtures and opponents

The Club World Cup now includes 32 teams, split between eight groups. This is a vast increase on the last format of the tournament, which had seven participants. Now, each team in the tournament is seeded and drawn into separate groups, with Porto being drawn in group A. In this group, Porto will play Brazillian stars SE Palmeiras, Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Porto plays each opponent once, starting against Palmeiras at the MetLife stadium in New York.  They follow this up by playing Inter Miami at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta before they finish against Al Ahly back at the MetLife stadium.

Porto’s opponents for CWC 2025

SE Palmeiras - Brazil

Palmeiras are one of the most dominant forces in South American football. The club have won the Copa Libertadores three times in their history, most recently winning in 2020 and 2021 - the reason they qualified for the Club World Cup. They have also won 12 league titles, the most by any team in the league’s history.

Inter Miami CF - USA

David Beckham’s Inter Miami features some of the biggest names of Barcelona’s recent history with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez all playing for them. They qualified for this tournament by winning the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield - the trophy given to the team with the best overall record during the MLS regular season - taking one of the spots given to the host nation of the tournament.

Al Ahly FC - Egypt

Al Ahly qualified for the Club World Cup as winners of the 2020/21, 2022/23 and 2023/24 CAF Champions Leagues. The Egyptian team are one of four clubs from Africa in the tournament and are a very popular club in the continent. They have 43 League titles, 39 Cup titles and 12 CAF Champions League titles overall.

TV coverage: Where to watch Porto at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup?

All 63 matches from the 2025 Club World Cup will be shown exclusively live on DAZN. Every single game from the tournament will be streamed for free, meaning fans of Porto or any team can follow the Club World Cup at no extra cost.

As DAZN holds full broadcasting rights, the London-based entertainment platform can sub-license matches to free-to-air TV channels. Alternatively, Porto fans can watch all of their team's games online or by downloading the DAZN App onto their smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, or game consoles.

Expected lineup: Porto's squad list for CWC 2025

Teams involved in the Club World Cup have been given special dispensation to conduct their transfer activity a fortnight in advance of the tournament. This means that European teams taking part in the tournament, like Porto, will have their transfer window open at the start on June 1st rather than June 12th like it is for all other UEFA-affiliated clubs.

The Premier League have reacted to this and allowed for the window to open for all teams for the same period so adapt their transfer window to start from June 1st to June 10th. It then closes for five days before reopening on June 16th. It remains to be seen if other leagues will follow this example.

What it means for Porto is that we may be able to see many new players play for the team in the tournament, adding excitement to potential new additions to the squad. Also, players who have their contract ending during the Club World Cup will be allowed to stay and play for their teams until the tournament's culmination, meaning that the team will not lose players during the tournament. For players on loan, like Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira, this needs to be agreed with the parent club.

Porto’s Potential Club World Cup squad

Goalkeepers

Diogo Costa, Claudio Ramos, Samuel Portugal

Defenders

Nehuen Perez, Otavio, Tiago Djalo, Ze Pedro, Ivan Marcano, Francisco Moura, Zaidu, Joao Mario, Martim Fernandes

Midfielders

Alan Varela, Marko Grujic, Stephem Eustaquio, Vasco Sousa, Tomas Perez, Fabio Vieira, Rodrigo Mora, Andre Franco

Forwards

William Gomes, Pepe, Goncalo Borges, Samu Aghehowa, Deniz Gul, Danny Namaso

Players to Watch

Samu Aghehowa

If things had turned out differently last summer Samu Aghehowa would be in the blue of Chelsea rather than Porto. This season he is being labelled as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe with 21 goals in the Liga Portugal and Europa League in 35 games and is now getting into the Spain national team squad.

Rodrigo Mora

Rodrigo Mora is being called a ‘generational talent’ and, at only 17, is already putting in performances that are way beyond his lowly age. The attacking midfielder had six goal contributions in his first 415 minutes of senior top-flight football, grabbing an assist on his debut in December. He has only developed since and is one of the most promising players in world football.

Diogo Costa

If rumours are to be believed, Costa is the heir apparent to Ederson at Manchester City. Porto’s goalkeeper has been Portugal's number one since he was 22 and, now at 25, has shown why he has been so highly rated over his whole career to date. He was the Primeira Liga Goalkeeper of the Year for 2021/22 and 2022/23 and has 14 clean sheets in 27 league games so far.

Winner odds: What are Porto’s chances of winning this year?

Porto are outsiders to win the Club World Cup. They would expect to qualify from their group and can expect to give any team they face a challenge. Paddy Power has Porto at 28/1 to win the tournament outright, way behind tournament favourites Real Madrid at 7/2, Manchester City at 9/2, Bayern Munich at 11/2, and Chelsea at 17/2.

How did Porto qualify for the 2025 tournament?

Porto qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup via the UEFA ranking pathway. They achieved a high ranking in the pathway for doing well in the UEFA Champions League over four years from 2021 to 2024.

Porto’s 2025 Club World Cup kit

Porto have not yet revealed a special kit for the Club World Cup so it is yet to be seen what they will wear during the tournament. There is a special part of the official FC Porto Store that has a Club World Cup section. In this section it is said that there are ‘exclusive jerseys’ so this may hint that a new top will be released.

Has Porto ever won the Club World Cup before?

Porto have never taken part in one Club World Cup previously. They famously won the UEFA Champions League under Jose Mourinho back in 2004. However, the Club World Cup was not held from 2001 to 2004 due to a combination of factors. Now, Porto will finally get their deserved place in the tournament after a long wait.
