Former Wallabies and Argentina coach Michael Cheika on Wednesday joined National Rugby League side Sydney Roosters as an assistant.

The veteran Australian will take on the role of specialist forwards coach from November ahead of the Roosters' pre-season.

"Michael and I have had a strong relationship for many years, and I've always admired the way he leads and challenges athletes," said Sydney head coach Trent Robinson.

"His experience in rugby brings a different perspective that will inspire and test our players and coaches.

"To have someone of his calibre join our programme is exciting, and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Cheika was most recently head coach at Leicester Tigers, departing after their Premiership final defeat to Bath in June.

Along with Australia and Argentina, he has also coached the NSW Waratahs and Stade Francais, while leading the Lebanon rugby league side since 2020.
