Holger Rune on Tuesday was heavily blamed by a user on social media for allegedly using a backdrop of Africa and black children to sell used tennis gear. Rune subsequently chose to respond to the allegations in the thread.

On Sunday, Rune announced that he had launched his own webshop.

On his webshop, Rune sells, among other things, signed t-shirts, caps, books and used rackets. The latter has been particularly controversial as Rune is selling some of his old, battered rackets for up to 6.000 Euros.

A number of major sports media outlets have devoted much attention to the matter and on social media, Rune's decision to make money on his used, battered rackets has been questioned.

A comment from a user called Chungmuro Rose prompted Rune to react on the issue. The user wrote:

"Went on Rune's website. This guy is so detestable man, he has a page titled "Africa" and it's 3 photos of his USED stuff shipped to an unnamed place in Africa with pictures of black children standing around it. He's also selling smashed rackets for 6K on there."

Rune then chose to respond in the following way:

"That’s right. I send most of my old tennis clothes to various clubs abroad that needs equipment instead of throwing it out and a couple of years ago I also started supporting charity organisations for kids financially and raising awareness of helping where we can. I am sure we can all do more, but this is what I do right now. And what do you do ?"

Another user then asked if Rune was defending the fact that he sells used rackets for large sums of money and Rune responded:

"I'm just explaining it to those who don't understand."

When Rune launched his website on Sunday, the Danish tennis star also explained that part of the profits from the sale would go to various charities.

The next challenge for Rune will be Wimbledon, which starts on Monday 30 July.
