Nigeria international John Noble (31) has called the Super Eagles' African Nations Championship draw tough but believes they are favorites to win the title for the first time.

At the draw ceremony held on Wednesday in Nairobi, the West African side was placed in Group D alongside reigning champions Senegal, Sudan, and Congo.

After missing the last two editions of the biennial African competition for domestic league players, the Nigerian team made a return by defeating arch-rivals Ghana in the qualifiers.

The Tanzania-based goalkeeper acknowledges that it’s a tough group but believes the Super Eagles are up to the challenge, dismissing any concerns about facing the title-holding Lions of Teranga.

"The group is tough, as expected, because every team worked really hard to qualify. And to be the best team in Africa, you have to face the best teams," Noble told Flashscore in an exclusive interview.

"Our Super Eagles must be prepared for every game, and I truly believe they can handle the challenge.

"Senegal may be the defending champions, but that’s history now. The results won’t be decided by on the pages of newspapers, but by what happens on the field within 90 minutes.

"So, I don’t see any reason to panic about being in the same group with them. Honestly, I think they are worried about playing Nigeria because of our strong football reputation and what we’re capable of achieving."

Congo’s best results at CHAN remain quarter-final finishes in 2018 and 2020, while the Sudanese national team has finished in third place twice.

The former Enyimba captain believes that proper preparation will help Nigeria succeed and thinks the tournament’s postponement could be a blessing in disguise.

Noble also highlights the Super Eagles' title credentials and remains optimistic that they can win the title for the first time.

The country’s best performance to date was a second-place finish in the 2018 edition, where they were defeated 4-0 by hosts Morocco in the final.

He continued: "Congo and Sudan also have a rich football history, but with proper preparation, our boys are ready for the challenge and can handle any opponent.

"I believe the postponement of the competition works in our favor, as it gives the technical team more time to prepare the Super Eagles.

"Based on how they performed in the qualifiers, I strongly believe we have a real chance to make history in Kenya by winning the competition for the first time.

"I watched the highlights of their friendly against Sunshine Stars, and I must say, I was impressed. The boys are determined, full of fight, and hungry for success."

Nigeria ramped up their preparations for the competition with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Nigeria Premier Football League side Sunshine Stars in a friendly match, with Isaac Saviour, Anas Yusuf, and Ikouwem Utim all getting on the score sheet.

The Fountain Gate FC goalkeeper hints at the opportunities for NPFL-based stars if they perform well in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, while also praising the team's key strengths that could lead to success.

Noble added: "Returning to the competition should be a huge boost for the team and a great motivation for them to perform well.

"It gives the players an opportunity to break into the senior national team and secure good professional contracts.

"I think our biggest strength is the attacking line, which combines youth and experience perfectly.

"The backline is solid as well, and as long as there are no fitness concerns, I believe they’ll perform exceptionally. All I can do is wish them the best of luck and hope they succeed."

The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled to take place from February 1-28, has been postponed by the Confederation of African Football, with the finals now set for August, though exact dates are yet to be announced.

A statement from CAF indicated that experts had advised more time was needed to ensure the infrastructure and facilities for the finals meet the required standards.
