A first-ever Allsvenskan title could become reality as early as this time next week for Mjallby, after their lead at the top extended to 11 points thanks to a 1-0 win away at Brommapojkarna and Halmstad springing a surprise by beating Hammarby by the same score.

A 1-1 draw at struggling Oster last time following narrow victories suggested the pressure was beginning to tell for Mjallby, and they were struggling for a breakthrough in the first half despite Brommapojkarna being the model of inconsistency of late.

And things got worse for the team from Hallevik early in the second half, when Oliver Zanden was denied a goalscoring opportunity by Uba Charles, giving the referee no choice but to reduce the visitors to 10 men.

But that decision galvanised Mjallby, whose never-say-die attitude came into force 16 minutes from time, when a deep corner caused havoc in the BP box, and appearing amid the goal-mouth scramble was Herman Johansson, who bundled the ball over the line.

That was enough to give MAIF all three points and heap pressure on Hammarby, who needed to beat Halmstad to have realistic ambitions of catching the leaders.

But while Charles was being sent off for Mjallby, their cause was receiving a huge boost at Örjans Vall, when the home side floated a free-kick into the area and brought down by Rami Kaib. His shot was blocked, but Villiam Granath ran on through to score for the second match in a row.

Bajen pushed for a late leveller, but their 1-0 defeat means they are now 11 points behind Mjallby with five matches to play.

The title can be won next weekend - if Mjallby win at home to Elfsborg, then a draw or defeat for Hammarby away to IFK Goteborg will secure a maiden Allsvenskan crown for the team from the fishing village.

The 2025 Allsvenskan title is now officially a two-horse race after AIK drew 1-1 at home to GAIS, leaving them 16 points off the pace with five matches to play.

More significant for both sides was the race for Europe, and GAIS got their noses in front just nine minutes in when Amin Boudri shrugged off challenges and fed the ball through to Ibrahim Diabate, who coolly steered the ball into the bottom corner.

That goal put the Gothenburg side into third place, until seven minutes after half-time, when an AIK corner was cleared to Bersant Celina at the edge of the area, and he took one touch to set himself before smashing the ball into the top corner.

The point was enough to keep AIK in the all-important third place, two points clear of the Mackerels, put the Solna side will be concerned that they are without a win in two.

GAIS find themselves in fifth place after Malmo began life without Henrik Rydstrom by grinding out a 3-2 win over bottom side Varnamo under the interim management of Anes Mravac.

Despite the visitors' struggles, there has been little stopping Ajdin Veljkovic of late - he put Varnamo ahead in the 39th minute, and then equalised just before the hour mark after Emmanuel Ekong and Pontus Jansson had turned things around for MFF either side of the break.

But with 18 minutes remaining, the home side grabbed all three points in the league for the first time in over six weeks, when Anders Christiansen took aim from 25 yards and curled the winning goal into the bottom corner.

It was heartbreak for Varnamo, whose relegation fears worsened -  they are now 14 points behind 13th-placed Sirius, and 10 behind Oster, who occupy the Playoff place. Worryingly, both have a game in hand.

On Saturday, Degerfors, who looked down and out for so long, gave their chances of survival another huge boost with a 2-1 win away at falling Elfsborg - their second win in as many matches.

Two Dijan Vukojevic goals in the first half did the damage, taking Degerfors level on points with Oster for the time being. A Per Frick consolation for Elfsborg could do nothing to stop them extending their winless league run to seven games.

Also yesterday, Hacken edged nearer to safety thanks to a 2-0 win over Norrkoping, taking them above their opponents on goal difference and seven points clear of the drop zone.

The unfortunate Max Watson scored an own goal early in the second half to break the deadlock, before Hacken doubled their advantage through Isak Brusberg in the 72nd minute.
