The inaugural and epic UEFA Champions League 'league phase' is over after a blockbuster final day delivered more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. With Manchester City and PSG squeezing into the play-offs with final-night wins, all the big boys remain in a competition that is heating up nicely.

The moral of this week's Champions League story is this year's crown could go so many different ways as the gap between the big boys and the underdogs shrinks more and more. The reality is there are so many good coaches in Europe now and we are being spoilt by medium-sized clubs like Aston Villa, Atalanta and Lille playing some brilliant football and mixing it with Europe's traditional elite.

A dramatic final day alone saw PSV stun league winners Liverpool, Atalanta drew with second-placed Barcelona and Dinamo Zagreb shocked AC Milan. On a night where Manchester City and PSG will take the headlines for squeezing through to the play-offs, credit should be given to the dark horses for overachieving against clubs with far superior financial power.

Star Player - Ousmane Dembele

Despite there being several impressive performers on matchday eight, Dembele's phenomenal hat-trick against Stuttgart to help PSG make the play-off, was inspired. It was also reminiscent of the Dembele of this season - a player who might finally be beginning to realise his high potential after years of inconsistency. PSG's talisman has now scored 15 goals this campaign as he goes from strength to strength. Is it time to bin the underachieving narrative?

The tricky French winger deserved his player of the match display last night after 90 minutes of causing havoc and notching three well-taken goals.

PSG's third and Dembele's second was the pick of the bunch as he took the ball up on the edge of the box, did a step over and accelerated past the defender before unleashing a venomous strike with his right foot into the top left-hand corner - unstoppable.

Dembele now has 11 goals in his last 10 appearances as he continues to enjoy a purple patch. If he can stay in form and Luis Enrique continues to nurture him, Dembele can still become the world-beater he was destined to be.

Surprise package - PSV

Whilst PSV might have been fairly safe from being knocked out of Europe, like everyone they had a lot still to play for with this season's new seeding format. Therefore defeating the competition's top side in front of their home fans and holding onto an impressive top 14 finish was the perfect end to the league phase for the Dutch outfit.

PSV's second 3-2 win of the campaign and third time scoring three goals or more was their most impressive thus far and should remind people that last season's semi-finalists shouldn't be ignored.

Whilst Liverpool may have heavily rotated, it was still a fantastic comeback from 2-1 to lead 3-2 in a frantic first-half which delivered five goals.

And it might have been easy to try and protect their lead, but PSV instead decided to try and kill the game off, ending the match with more possession and XG - this win was no fluke.

It goes without saying that tougher tests against fully strength sides await (if the Dutch giants remain in the competition) but it was a morale-boosting victory against Arne Slot's high-flying reds.

Team of the week - Lille

Spearheaded by Jonathan David's eight goals, Lille find themselves safely in the last 16 - a statement few would have expected before the campaign began. The league phase ended spectacularly for the French club as they humiliated Feyenoord 6-1 in a thrilling attacking display.

It was a good job too because the emphatic nature of the victory was what squeezed them into a top-eight finish, avoiding a two-legged play-off match in the process.

Lille have arguably been the surprise package of the Champions League campaign. They pulled off a massive scoop against holders Real Madrid in October followed by a stunning away win against Real's city rivals Atletico later the same month.

And they are a fun team to watch.

Lille might not always dominate possession or create loads of chances but they are rarely involved in dull games and frequently outperform their XG - a hallmark of a clinical side.

David is a key reason for that - the striker has been ruthless when given a sniff of goal this campaign and if Lille are to go deep in Europe, he will surely play a key part.

Moment of the week - Ollie Watkins misses bizarre penalty

Watkins was a hot topic of conversation before Aston Villa hosted Celtic in a battle of Britain last night as Arsenal reportedly submitted a bid for the English striker. That bid was instantly rejected by Villa who don't want to see their star striker leave in January.

Focus then to an important night of football where victory would see them secure a top eight finish.

Watkins would play a key part in a thrilling 4-2 victory over Celtic by scoring and assting twice as Morgan Rogers stole the headlines with a hat-trick.

After Watkins fired Villa back ahead however, the English striker missed a penalty which gave shades of John Terry in the 2008 Champions League final.

Watkins slipped at the crucial moment and as he fell the ball bobbled off his right foot, looping it into the air and over the bar. It was a comical moment which instantly reminded people and (especially Chelsea fans) of Terry's painful slip almost 17 years ago.
