Dubbed the Champions League derby, the match on 9 April lived up to its billing and provided a real spectacle for millions of football fans.

It looked as if City were going to win the game but a superb angled volley from Valverde, who beat Ortega after a Vinicius cross from the left flank, spoilt the Citizens' celebrations as a spectacular spectacle finished level.
In the return leg in a week later, Real went through on penalties with the score 1-1 after goals from Rodrygo and Kevin De Bruyne.
Real would go on to win the Champions League as the Spaniards defeated Germany's Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley in the final.
Since that match, things have gone downhill for both sides.
In this season's Champions League main group, both Real and City occupy playoff places for the time being but many fans would have expected their teams to be safely in the top eight positions that go straight through to the round of 16.
Last season, Carlo Ancelotti's Real won the Champions League, the LaLiga title as well as the Spanish Super Cup and the European Super Cup while Manchester City under Pep Guardiola triumphed at the Club World Cup and won the Premier League title for the fourth time in a row. With two rounds left to play in this first phase of the Champions League, City occupy 22nd place with just eight points from six games while Real are two places higher in 20th place with nine points.
