Borussia Dortmund ended a six-match losing streak in away matches by beating UEFA Champions League (UCL) surprise package GNK Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 – the Croatians’ eighth successive defeat against German opposition.

Dortmund’s previous win on the road came back on matchday one against Club Brugge KV, and they started like a team intent on ending their travelling struggles.

Their dominance came millimeters away from being rewarded in just the seventh minute when Waldemar Anton’s cross was headed against the bar by Ramy Bensebaini, but clear-cut chances proved hard to come by from there.

Dinamo almost took advantage of the visitors’ lack of cutting edge when the impressive Ronael Pierre-Gabriel burst forward from full-back, but his long-range effort sailed narrowly over the bar.

Nuri Sahin’s men were quick to get back on top, wreaking havoc down the wings through the pacey pair of Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens.

The duo combined to create a huge chance for Dortmund in the final few minutes before the break, with Gittens’ pinpoint cross headed on target by Malen, only to be saved at point-blank range by Daniel Zagorac at full stretch.

However, the Dinamo goalkeeper had no answer just a minute later when the electric Gittens cut in from the left and rifled an effort into the bottom corner, netting his fourth UCL goal of the season to send the visitors in at half-time with the lead.

Dortmund’s rhythm seemed affected by the withdrawal of Julian Brandt at the break, and with full-back Julian Ryerson replacing him, a reshuffle was required. That meant Pascal Gross returned to a more familiar midfield role, though his part in his side’s second goal had little to do with his starting position.

Gross delivered an inch-perfect corner that was glanced into the far corner by Bensebaini, who gave his side breathing space with a second goal for Die Schwarzgelben.

Only Zagorac’s fingertips prevented Dinamo from falling three behind, as he produced a brilliant stop to deny Malen’s deflected effort.

Nenad Bjelica’s men offered very little going the other way, leaving Dortmund stopper Gregor Kobel little more than a spectator as the visitors cruised to victory.

Perhaps Dinamo’s minds switched to their blockbuster domestic clash against Hajduk Split at the weekend, though they missed out on the chance to win three successive UCL games for the first time ever.

They’ve now won just once in six matches across all competitions, while another comprehensive victory – wrapped up by a clinical late strike from returning substitute Serhou Guirassy – serves as the perfect warm-up for Dortmund ahead of Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich on Saturday.
