Despite failing to win for the seventh consecutive game away from home in Europe, Kairat Almaty advance to face Celtic in the UEFA Champions League Qualification Playoff after winning on penalties against ŠK Slovan Bratislava following a 1-0 (1-1 Agg) defeat on the night.

Looking to increase their one-goal lead from the first leg, the Kazakh side started the game strongly, but couldn’t find a way to test Dominik Takac despite some promising attacks.

The hosts finally woke up midway through the half and started to exert pressure, with the breakthrough coming just before the half-hour mark. A flowing move was capped off when Marko Tolic produced a defence-splitting pass to find Robert Mak on the edge of the area, and his first-time finish into the bottom corner left Aleksandr Zarutskiy with no chance.

The Slovakian side kept pushing in an attempt to turn the tie on its head before HT, but Tigran Barseghyan’s powerful effort from distance fizzed wide of the goal. With the hosts starting in the ascendancy again after the break, Kairat almost snatched a vital goal out of nothing, but Takac beat away Edmilson’s fierce shot from a tight angle.

Just as it looked like the game was starting to settle down, Slovan missed a golden chance just before the hour mark. A rapid counter-attack saw the ball played through to Mak, who attempted to emulate his earlier goal, but this time his finish cannoned off the foot of the post before being cleared.

Another major chance came and went 10 minutes later; this time, Cesar Blackman failed to convert after being picked out in the box by Mak.

Both sides pushed to find a winner before ET, but Barseghyan shot just wide for the hosts before Dastan Satpayev missed an even better chance for Kairat, shooting tamely at the goalkeeper after finding himself in on goal. All momentum was lost at the start of ET; however, with the away side taking every opportunity to stop the game and receive treatment.

After a completely uneventful ET period, Zarutskiy and Takac both made saves, leaving the teams at 3-3 before the fifth takers. Barseghyan proved to be the villain of the piece for the hosts as he haplessly fired wide, leaving Jorginho to take the headlines as he struck the decisive spot kick to send Kairat through.
