Another two sets of Championship fixtures have passed, with the races for promotion and the playoffs taking some major turns while the relegation battle continues to tighten.

The fight to finish in the top two automatic promotion spots continues to take several dramatic turns as every team in the top four dropped points at some point over the last week - leaving it wide open with nine games remaining.

Likewise, the race to finish in one of the two remaining playoff spots behind the top four is the tightest it has ever been, with just five points separating fifth and 11th in the league table.

If that wasn't enough, the relegation battle now seems impossible to predict with seven clubs at genuine risk of dropping into League One.

Flashscore takes a look at all the key areas of the Championship table.

Promotion contenders fail to capitalise on Leeds slip

The promotion race is still just about being fought between four teams, with Leeds, Sheffield United and Burnley the major players and Sunderland hanging on by a thread below them.

Leeds are still the obvious favourites to win the division but did recently slip up with a shock 1-0 defeat away at Portsmouth last weekend - Colby Bishop scoring the only goal of the game after several missed chances from Daniel Farke's side.

That gave some hope to the three sides below, who all picked up hard-fought victories at the weekend only to throw away any ground gained during the midweek fixtures.

Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland all drew 1-1 during their recent matches and, like all title contenders do, Leeds bounced back with a 2-0 win against Millwall to restore their lead at the top of the table.

With nine games to go, it looks to be shrinking into a three-horse race for the top two spots as fourth-placed Sunderland continue to gradually slip away.

The Black Cats probably needed to win the majority of their remaining fixtures and hope that two of the three sides above them hit a wall in terms of form - and while that can still happen, it becomes less likely as the games tick by.

Both Burnley and Sheffield United look well-placed to continue their promotion challenges right until the final day and even still have to play each other, which is shaping up to be one of the most important fixtures remaining on the calendar.

Leeds still stick out as the favourites to return to the Premier League, though, and bouncing back from a disappointing result against Portsmouth with a convincing win over Millwall helps to establish themselves as serious title contenders.

Perhaps in the past, Farke's men might have let the stumble get to them, but the mentality appears to be better this time around and the team are doing well to dispel any doubts surrounding a potential 'bottle job' as the campaign edges toward its end.

Playoff race heats up

The current top four are too far out in front for anyone below to catch them (13 points separate fourth and fifth), which realistically leaves two playoff spots to contend for.

Of the two available positions, a staggering seven clubs seem to be in contention as the business end of the season rolls around.

West Brom and Coventry currently occupy fifth and sixth spot, but both dropped points in their recent games, with the Baggies drawing 1-1 with Burnley and the Sky Blues losing 2-0 to Derby.

Below them, Bristol City sit two points away in seventh, followed by Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday.

Just five points separate the seven clubs, and with 27 still available, anything can change in the coming weeks.

West Brom perhaps have the best-equipped squad for a playoff push with the likes of Adam Armstrong, Josh Maja, Tom Fellows and Mikey Johnston all solid attacking options.

Frank Lampard's Coventry have momentum on their side following a run of five consecutive wins - although that was stunted during the week after their shock defeat at relegation strugglers Derby.

Of the sides below the playoffs, Bristol City have emerged as a surprise contender to push on after a promising run since the turn of the year.

The Robins have lost just two out of 13 league games in 2025 and could be on the verge of ending a stint of mid-table finishes in recent years.

The likes of Middlesbrough and Blackburn have perhaps shown a little bit too much inconsistency to warrant a top-six finish while Watford and Sheffield Wednesday would need to build some serious momentum to leapfrog the sides above them.

Seven teams at threat of relegation

The Championship's current relegation battle might be one of the most compelling we've seen in recent years, with no fewer than seven clubs at risk of going down.

Plymouth are currently bottom of the league and looked certain for the drop until the arrival of manager Miran Muselic - but Argyle are just three points from safety after a 2-1 win against Portsmouth during the week.

Above them are Luton, who have been one of the league's worst sides all season but are now showing some fight following two wins and one draw in their last five games.

Derby complete the current bottom three but, again, aren't going down without a fight after back-to-back victories over Blackburn and Coventry.

Of the four teams above the drop zone, both Cardiff and Oxford are looking like likely candidates to get dragged down into the relegation spots.

Oxford enjoyed a great start under Gary Rowett but are now without a win in nine games and seem to be losing momentum at the worst possible time.

Cardiff, meanwhile,  are on a run of three losses in a row and were just beaten 2-1 at home by fellow strugglers Luton.

Two other clubs to keep an eye on are Stoke and Hull - with the Potters struggling to pick up form under new manager Mark Robins.

The Tigers should have enough about them to pull away from the drop and a decent run of form has seen them lose just once in their last five games, although they still sit just five points above the bottom three.

In a league full of twists and turns, it feels like there are plenty more shocks to come over the final nine rounds of the campaign.
