Ajax have presented FC Twente midfielder and former youth academy product Youri Regeer (21) as their first incoming transfer of the January window.

Youri Regeer left Ajax on a free transfer for fellow Eredivisie outfit FC Twente in 2023 after having played for the Amsterdam club between 2017 and 2023, amassing 8 senior appearances along the way.

In the 18 months Regeer spent at Twente, the midfielder played 63 games before returning to Ajax after the record champions activated the €4.3 million buy-back clause.

"Youri has been able to get a lot of experience at FC Twente since his departure from Amsterdam, making considerable strides and becoming a mature player," Ajax's technical director Alex Kroes said on the club's website.

"He knows the club and knows what is asked of you at Ajax."

Positional confusion

According to several media reports, Regeer was the desired replacement for the recently departed right-back Devyne Rensch.

However, Ajax manager Francesco Farioli sees Regeer as "more of a midfielder", the Italian confessed during the press conference ahead of Ajax's Europa League fixture against Latvian champions RFS.

"I see and read a lot that he is a player I like, but I believe he is a very good midfielder," said Farioli.

"He has said so himself, that that is his favourite position. I agree with him: he is a good midfielder."

"He is immediately ready to play in multiple positions and given his age, he is a player we can enjoy for years to come," continued Kroes.

"In short, we are very confident of a bright future together with him."
