Feyenoord had failed to win any of their previous four games, losing to FCSB in the UEFA Europa League, to Ajax in the Eredivisie, and to Heerenveen in the KNVB Beker, before drawing with FC Twente to close out 2025.
Manager Robin van Persie changed his starting lineup for the thirteenth game running, starting Goncalo Borges on the wing and handing Givairo Read his first start since early November. It created little fireworks to start, with only Quinten Timber attempting a shot in the opening minutes.
Leo Sauer broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with Feyenoord's second attempt of the game, beating Oliver Braude to the ball and placing it calmly behind Bernt Klaverboer.
After Maxence Rivera missed a big chance to put Heerenveen back alongside Feyenoord, captain Luuk Brouwers scored the equaliser in the 41st minute after passing newly-named Feyenoord captain and goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther.
Barely two minutes later, however, Sem Steijn headed in a long cross from Jordan Bos, who placed the ball finely at the far post for the former captain.
A quiet second half saw neither side create big chances until the final ten minutes. Substitute and Ajax loanee Amourricho van Axel Dongen, who'd played just 56 minutes all season due to injury struggles, needed just 17 seconds to make his mark and score a liberating equaliser in the 87th minute.
Feyenoord, who failed to generate a single shot on goal in the last 36 minutes, dropped points yet again as pressure on Van Persie keeps mounting. The Rotterdam outfit are in second place in the Eredivisie, just three points ahead of Ajax and 13 behind leaders PSV.
