Swedish champions Malmo face a repeat of the most famous match in their history in the League Phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League (UEL) as they have been drawn to take on 1979 European Cup Final opponents Nottingham Forest.

Forest under Brian Clough won 1-0 that night in Munich, and Malmo will be hoping for better this time around, though they will be aiming for a result at the City Ground, as the Reds clash is one of their four away fixtures in the League Phase.

The Himmelsblatt will, in fact, be meeting three former champions of Europe in their eight UEL League Phase games, as they will also travel to FC Porto and welcome Crvena zvezda to Eleda Stadion.

There is a distinct southeastern flavour to Malmo's home matches, as Dinamo Zagreb, Ludogorets and Panathinaikos will also make the trip to south Sweden. Viktoria Plzen and Genk are the Allsvenskan champions other away opponents.

The full fixture list with dates and kick-off times will be finalised in due course. Matchday one will be played on 24th-25th September, while the eighth and final round of matches will take place on 29th January 2026.

Malmo's UEL League Phase opponents

HOME: Dinamo Zagreb (CRO), Crvena zvezda (SRB), Ludogorets (BUL), Panathinaikos (GRE)

AWAY: FC Porto (POR), Viktoria Plzen (CZE), Nottingham Forest (ENG), Genk (BEL)

A 5-0 aggregate win over Sigma Olomouc in the Playoff Round secured Malmo's place in the 36-team League Phase, having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League qualifiers earlier this summer following a defeat by the same score to FC Copenhagen in the Third Qualifying Round.

A place in the top 24 and a place in the knockout stages will be the target for MFF, after they could only manage one win and two draws from their eight matches last season, finishing in 31st place.
