FC Utrecht qualified for the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League when Swiss side Servette FC were comfortably beaten 2-1 in the Galgenwaard.

FC Utrecht boss Ron Jans changed his front three for the fifth game in a row, this time by force majeure as David Min and Yoann Cathline missed out due to injuries. Noah Ohio and Miguel Rodriguez returned to the front line and were joined by Adrian Blake.

The home side won the first leg in Switzerland 3-1 and had won all four official games so far this season. The Domstad outfit opened their Eredivisie campaign last weekend with a 4-0 win over Heracles Almelo, but took it somewhat easy in the opening half against Servette as only Utrecht's Gjivai Zechiel came close to a goal, but the midfielder hit the crossbar.

Adrian Blake thought he'd put Utrecht up 1-0, but the goal of the English youngster was ruled out for handball.

Vital Victor Jensen

FC Utrecht dialled up the pressure after the break and took the lead after 57 minutes when Victor Jensen, who'd scored three goals in four games already, tapped in a rebound after Servette stopper Joel Mall failed to safely parry the ball away.

After Jensen and teammate Miliano Jonathans came close to the 2-0, the Danish midfielder added a second to his match tally following a well-coordinated Utrecht attack. Substitute Derry John Murkin found the unmarked Jensen in Servette's box, and the Dane had an open goal in front of him as he put Utrecht up two.

As much as Utrecht wanted to keep a first clean sheet in the Europa League, referee Chris Kavanagh put the ball on the spot when Alonzo Engwanda brought down Jeremy Guillemenot, after which Ablie Jallow converted the penalty.

It wasn't enough to inspire a historic comeback from Servette, who are left to fight for their European season in the UEFA Conference League play-off round after they started their campaign in the UEFA Champions League.

FC Utrecht will play European football again for the first time since 2011 after their win guaranteed them participation in the UEFA Conference League. In order to remain in the Europa League, Ron Jans' side will have to deal with Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar, who eliminated FC Utrecht in the second round of the Europa League qualifying phase in 2019.
