Ederson’s heroics helped eliminate FCSB from the UEFA Europa League (UEL), as the Fenerbahçe goalkeeper made a string of fine saves in a 1-1 draw in Romania.

The visitors, who were already certain of their place in the top 24, started well, with Talisca sending a thunderbolt narrowly off target. T

hen, after Dennis Politic had seen his near-post strike pushed away at the other end, Youssef En-Nesyri forced a stunning stop out of Ștefan Târnovanu.

The Red and Blues stopper was powerless to prevent the Turkish outfit from taking the lead from the resulting corner, though, with İsmail Yüksek nodding home from inside the six-yard box.

That finally prompted a response from their Romanian hosts, perhaps spurred belatedly into action in the knowledge that they needed a win to have any kind of chance of progressing.

They forged a slew of chances, but were consistently denied by Ederson, who made a trio of fine stops from Darius Olaru, David Miculescu and Mert Müldür. The best was yet to come, though, with the Brazilian goalkeeper pouncing to his right to beat away Mamadou Thiam’s fierce effort.

Things continued in a similar vein after the break, with Olaru breaking through one-on-one, but once again thwarted by Ederson, who was looking to register his third away UEL clean sheet of the campaign.

With the way results were folding elsewhere, FCSB still had a chance to reach the play-offs, but the chances worryingly started to dry up, leading to a string of attacking changes.

And those changes paid off when substitute Juri Cisotti equalised with 19 minutes to go, prodding home after being picked out by Risto Radunović.

That swung the momentum in favour of the Romanian side, and their search for a winner included a rasping Thiam volley that went narrowly over.

Fenerbahçe were not going anywhere either, though, as a win would guarantee a seeded play-off spot, and Kerem Aktürkoğlu lashed one low drive just wide of the far post.

That led to the Turkish side finishing strongly, and Marco Asensio saw a late effort kept out, while there was still time for Ederson to make one further world-class intervention, springing high to deny Mihai Lixandru.

Ultimately, the two teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw that eliminates FCSB, whereas their opponents failed to get the win that would have secured a seeded spot in the play-offs.
