PSV winger Ruben van Bommel could miss this week's Johan Cruyff Shield due to a back injury.

Van Bommel sustained the injury in last weekend's friendly against Athletic Club (2-1), but the injury appears to be less severe than initially feared.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad's Rik Elfrink, Van Bommel is aiming to return to the practice pitch by the end of this week. The timescale puts the Johan Cruyff Shield, the Dutch traditional season opener, in jeopardy.

Van Bommel joined PSV from AZ for a reported fee of €16 million. The son of former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel was brought in to replace the departed Noa Lang, who joined Serie A champions Napoli.

Couhaib Driouech looks set to replace Van Bommel in the game against Go Ahead Eagles.

The Johan Cruyff Shield match between PSV and Go Ahead Eagles will kick off on Sunday, August 3rd, at 18.00 CET.
