The Danish women's national team on Friday night preserved their hopes of claiming top spot in their Nations League group when they booked a 2-1 win away against Wales.

Denmark struggled to execute their game plan but still managed to come away with a 2-1 win against Wales  in their UEFA Women’s Nations League A Group 1 game played at Cardiff City Stadium.

The Danish favorites dominated the opening stages of the match and took a deserved lead after six minutes when Signe Bruun celebrated her 50th international for Denmark by giving the visitor's a 1-0 lead with a clinical finish from the edge of the box.

Wales were level after the half-hour mark, Rhiannon Roberts’ cross collected by Ceri Holland, who cut back inside to rifle a shot into the roof of the net.

The home side could then have taken the lead when Lily Woodham cleverly set up Hannah Cain but her angled effort went over the bar.

Both sides struggled to settle into their stride in a rather messy second half before Amalie Vangsgaard wasted a glorious chance to restore the lead for Denmark with 20 minutes left when her effort went far over the bar.

Just a few seconds after Cain got through on goal from Alice Griffiths long ball but was thwarted by goalkeeper Maja Ostergaard.

A crazy sequence of events then culminated when Emma Snerle delivered a perfect through-ball for Vangsgaard who this time made no mistake.

Denmark will face Italy on Tuesday in a new crucial Nations League clash at home.
