Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has spoken to the media ahead of this weekend's clash with fierce rivals Liverpool.

In the biggest Premier League game of the weekend, United head to Anfield, where a win would take them to within just two points of Sunday's hosts. A loss for Liverpool would be their fourth in a row, something United would relish in.

Ratcliffe's words help Amorim's confidence

Amorim first on whether recent comments from Sir Jim Ratcliffe backing him is a help for his confidence, as reports continue to flood in about him being sacked.

"First of all I can feel it, it is not just that thing that people say, I feel it every day.

"Sometimes the pressure I put on the team and myself is so much bigger. I know it is going to take a while. It is really good to hear that.

"I think it helps our fans to understand that leadership know it is going to take a while.

"But at the same time I don’t like that because I don’t want that feeling in our club that we have time to sort things out. We need to prove in football and at big clubs that every week we are ready to win games."

United can compete with any opponent

Next, he moved on to this weekend's opponents in what is the 244th time the two sides have gone head-to-head, with United leading the head-to-head record with 91 wins to Liverpool's 82.

"I remember (in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool last season) we played really well, but it was a draw. I was really upset at the end of the game.

"We prove at the end we can compete against any opponent. I know it is special for our club.

I know they are competing for a number of titles. It is one more game we need to prove again that we are playing better. We need to be better in both boxes. It's one more game that we need to win."

Amorim wants his team to expect to win every game

Amorim was then asked about his team's performances against bigger clubs as the majority of his wins with The Red Devils have come against either newly promoted sides or teams down to 10 men.

"Maybe the expectations, when you have to win and the responsibility of winning it is so much harder.

"When you play in big clubs, you need to win every game. We have difficulties sometimes to play with that responsibility. Maybe when Manchester United are not expected to win, it is easier for the players to perform but we need to change that."

Lammens is not Schmeichel

Questions then turned to goalkeeper Senne Lammens and whether he will start against Liverpool over Altay Bayindir who is also fighting for his spot between the sticks.

"It is possible, you have to prove it during the week. It is possible he is going to start the game. The first impression in this game is really important. To maintain the level is even more important.

"He is not (Peter) Schmeichel yet. But he showed a lot of composure."

Team news

Finally, Amorim gave some team news after what has been a very busy international break for many United players, with some even being handed extra time off to recover.

"(Lisandro Martinez) is not fit for the Liverpool game, but he is near but almost returning to training with the team.

"(Noussair Mazraoui), I don’t know.

"The rest of the guys from the national team are ready but some players play in Japan, so we need to be careful.

"Diogo (Dalot) didn’t play the last game, Bruno (Fernandes) played 62 minutes, so we have to try to balance everything so that they are ready."
