Former Ajax manager John Heitinga has joined Tottenham Hotspur as assistant manager, the club announced on Thursday.

Heitinga, 42, joined Ajax from Liverpool, where he was assistant manager to Arne Slot, in June 2025. His reign in Amsterdam lasted only four months, however, as the former Everton defender was sacked in November following a string of poor results.

At Tottenham Hotspur, Heitinga joins a coaching staff under heavy pressure, with Thomas Frank's side having won just three of their last 14 games across all competitions.

"John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch," Frank said in a club statement.

“He had an impressive playing career across Europe – including five years in the Premier League – and with the Dutch national team."

Liverpool fans were calling for Heitinga's return to Merseyside following his sacking in November, as Liverpool were going through a tough period themselves.

Defensive focus

Frank confirmed that Heitinga will mostly focus on defending in practice. Spurs have only kept four clean sheets since their 4-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Kopenhagen on November 4th.

“As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward.”

Spurs face West Ham and Borussia Dortmund next, with the club still fighting for a top-8 finish in the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League.
