Before this, only four Africans had earned a spot in this prestigious group: Nigeria's all-time top scorer in the English top flight Yakubu Ayegbeni, who had successful stints at Everton, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth; and Nwankwo Kanu, who played for Arsenal, Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion.
The other two were two-time African Player of the Year and Senegal legend El Hadji Diouf, who featured for Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool; as well as Mohamed Diame, who played for Wigan Athletic, West Ham United and Newcastle United.
Iwobi had already accumulated over 50 Premier League appearances with his former clubs Arsenal and Everton before joining the Cottagers on September 2, 2023, for an undisclosed fee.
Fortunately, Fulham avoided defeat at Craven Cottage. Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town seemed on course for a famous away win, but a late penalty from Mexico international Raul Jimenez levelled the score in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
After playing 63 minutes, the Nigerian was substituted for Rodrigo Muniz. During his time on the field, he recorded two shots, two key passes and completed 42 passes with an accuracy of 83.3%. He also made 51 touches, one dribble, and delivered two crosses.
Speaking to the media after the match, Ipswich boss McKenna expressed his satisfaction with the result but lamented the penalties that he felt were rightfully denied to his team.
“It's a point gained from where we were this morning, against a good team, and also two points dropped from where we were in the 90th minute. So of course it's a game of mixed emotions," he said.
"I'm very pleased and proud of many aspects of the performance and I'm disappointed with the two penalties we gave away because they were not very, very, very threatening situations. They're probably both a little bit unnecessary.
"But to come away from home and play how we did on and off the ball, score two goals, means there are a lot of positives to take. We take the point."
As a result of this outcome, Fulham sit in ninth place in the league with 30 points from 20 matches, while the newly promoted team are in 18th having earned 16 points from the same number of games.
Fulham's next match is an FA Cup clash against Watford on January 9, with Iwobi expected to play a key role in Marco Silva’s midfield.
