This weekend Manchester United head to Liverpool with Ruben Amorim ready to kick off a vital phase of his reign at Old Trafford.

The club have decided not to draw up a shortlist of potential replacements and if the next four games before the international break go well, Amorim should be set for the season.

That is the view of club insiders who insist there is a determination to stand by the boss and allow him the chance to see out the campaign.

United’s hierarchy remain hopeful that Amorim can succeed and as long as he stays within reach of the Champions League positions he will continue as head coach.

While pressure had been building over the past month it was decided during the international break that the club would not begin identifying possible successors - a move designed to avoid placing any unnecessary strain on Amorim.

If results go badly over the coming weeks it is possible that senior figures will reassess the situation and explore ways to turn things around including considering alternatives in the dugout.

For now though that is not the case but performances as well as results will be closely monitored over the next four fixtures.

It is a run that begins at Anfield before matches against Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur - a stretch that should reveal exactly how competitive this current version of United truly are.

Key decisions over team selection and in-game management will be crucial but Amorim knows this is his opportunity to finally lay down a foundation.

Almost a year on from his appointment as United’s head coach we are about to see just how much faith the club really have in him.
