Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has joked that captain Bruno Fernandes may want to steal his job.

Fernandes has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa before Christmas. However, the Portuguese playmaker has been helping out behind the scenes as United learn to cope without their captain.

Fernandes is a true leader

The 31-year-old was pitchside before United’s victory against Newcastle and is often alongside Amorim during training sessions as he learns from the best.

Ahead of United’s clash with Wolves, Amorim has joked that Fernandes may be aiming to take over his job as he proves himself to be a leader on and off the pitch.

"He cannot be the guy that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking, he's always speaking. That's why he's the captain. He has bad things sometimes, the way move his arms, but he has a lot of good things.

"And he's always leaving the game, the practice every time, every time he makes a recovery from the game, he is the guy that is going to watch the other guys training in that day.

"So there is a lot of things that you guys don't see, but that he does all the time. He's the guy that is watching the trainings even after treatment is going on there.

"I don't know if he wants my job, but he's a leader. The guy's a leader."

Three points are imperative

Amorim has seen his side lose just one of their last seven, but his troubles will continue against Wolves due to several key injuries, including to Fernandes, who could prove instrumental to the club’s preparation.

Speaking on this week’s opponents, Amroim said his side must collect three points against a side who are winless so far this season and are dead bottom of the table.

He said: "Of course, we need to. And they showed that against Arsenal, they could have got at least one point.

"So in the Premier League, you never know. They have their problems, we have our problems. But like in this game, there are no excuses. We need to win. We'll try to win the game."
