Why Barcelona's serious interest in Bayern's Harry Kane makes perfect sense for all parties

So far in 2025/26, Bayern Munich and England centre-forward Harry Kane has scored 26 goals in 20 games in all competitions.

His sensational current form shouldn't really come as any surprise, however, given how well the 32-year-old has adjusted to life in the German top flight after leaving boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur.

Sensational figures at Bayern

In his first season with the Bundesliga outfit, Kane finished with 44 goals and 13 assists in 45 games for the Bavarians.

36 of those were in the league, leaving him agonisingly short of Robert Lewandowski's all-time record of 41 goals in a German league campaign.

At the end of the following season, 2024/25, 41 goals and 14 assists in 51 games was his return.

Age clearly hasn't wearied him and, whilst he might not get up and down the pitch as he once did, his sniper's eye for goal remains fully intact.

Given the way in which he's begun this season, it appears there's already chatter concerning whether the England captain can break the Polish international's record this season.

Barcelona want Kane to replace Lewandowski

The pair could also be linked in other ways, too, after it was revealed that Barcelona are setting their sights on Kane to be the replacement for Lewandowski, whose contract with the Catalan giants ends in June 2026.

The Englishman's deal with Bayern would still have a year to run by then, but given that he has a release clause next summer of €65m/£57m, the club might well be inclined to cash in rather than letting him leave for nothing 12 months later.

That's always assuming that the player himself is willing to give up his life in Bavaria, of course.

Settled with his wife and four children, it would be quite the upheaval for Kane to relocate again - and that's also discounting that Spurs - who have matching rights on any potential bid - don't come back in for him and try and tempt him 'home.'

Heading back to N17 would at least give him the chance to break Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League goalscoring record over the next couple of seasons, and that's something which could appeal.

Equally, the chance to move to arguably one of the biggest clubs in European football and follow in the footsteps of Gary Lineker, an England striker who joined Tottenham from the Catalan giants, could be too tempting to turn down.

Tough act to follow

Were Kane to swap Bavaria for Catalonia, he has a lot to live up to because Lewandowski, despite being five years the England man's senior, has been brilliant for Barcelona.

In the 159 games that he's played for the club to date, he's scored 108 goals and provided 20 assists. Significantly more than any other player in the squad.

His experience and know-how have been a huge factor in Barcelona continuing their ascent from the depths of 2020, when Lewandowski was on target for Bayern in their 8-2 Champions League thrashing of a team that included Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Of the Barcelona starters in that game, only Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen remain at the club, with the latter almost certain to leave at some point in the near future.

Kane thrives on service

Barca have certainly enjoyed playing with a more physical striker in the central role, so making a play for Kane does make sense, and if they're able to land him at the price expected, he could, as with Lewandowski, quite quickly pay for himself.

Kane thrives on service, and there aren't too many better wingers in world football at the moment than Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

Not to mention a reborn Marcus Rashford.

He, too, has found remarkable consistency this season, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in his 16 appearances for the Blaugranes in 2025/26, and if he stays at the club beyond his loan spell, he would surely jump at the chance of reigniting his international partnership with his fellow frontman.

There's still plenty of work to be done between now and next summer before any deal can even be presented to Kane, of course, but the lack of a contract being placed before Lewandowski does suggest that Barcelona will be willing to let him leave once his contract ends.

105,000 fans when Spotify Camp Nou is complete

Even if Julian Alvarez may be a better stylistic fit for the Catalans, his transfer fee will be problematic for a club that is still not out of the mire financially.

Therefore, as long as Kane makes the right noises in Barca's direction, there's every reason to think that the club will follow up on their original interest in due course.

With 105,000 fans at the Spotify Camp Nou when all of the modifications have been completed, too, the England man could then spend the final years of his playing career knocking it out of the park in the biggest stadium in Europe.
