For the second time in history, Finland have chosen a Dane to manage their men's national team.

Jacob Friis will be presented as new coach for the Finnish national team on Monday.

Friis is currently assistant coach in Augsburg under Jess Thorup and the German club confirms to Kicker that Friis will be allowed to leave the club.

"We have given Jacob permission to take the unique opportunity to become national coach for Finland. It was his wish, and we have complied", says Augsburg director Michael Ströll.

He also states that Finland will pay a lower six-figure sum in Euros to free Friis from Augsburg. The size of the amount may grow if Friis is successful as Finnish national coach.

Initially, the plan is not for Friis to be replaced directly in Augsburg, adds the director as Jess Thorup also has the former Danish national substitute coach Lars Knudsen as part of his staff.

Jacob Friis has previously been head coach at Aalborg BK (AaB) and Viborg in the Danish Superliga. He joined Augsburg in November 2023, but is now heading north.

In the period 1996-1999, Richard Møller Nielsen, who won EURO 92 with Denmark, served as Finnish national team coach. Markku Kanerva was the most recent coach for the Finnish national team, but he quit in November last year.
