Dean Huijsen, the young Spanish-Dutch centre-back, has been called up by Luis de la Fuente to Spain's national side from the under-21's to replace Barcelona's Inigo Martinez.

"Martinez has been ruled out of the Spanish national team squad due to internal parameniscitis in his right knee, according to a report received from Barcelona," the RFEF said before the Spanish national team began training in Las Rozas for the international break in March.

The man chosen to take the place of the blaugrana defender is a debutant Huijsen. The Bournemouth 19-year-old was granted Spanish nationality on February 21st 2024 and will be making his first appearance for La Roja's senior side.

Thus, if the youngster makes his debut in any of the Nations League quarter-final matches against the Netherlands, the possibility of him being recruited by the Netherlands themselves to join their ranks will be nullified. That was a long shot, though, given the player's desire to compete for Spain.

Huijsen's attachment to the country, although he was born in Amsterdam, comes from having grown up in Marbella from the age of five.
