Spain's Dean Huijsen said it was "meant to be" after making his professional debut for Spain in and against the Netherlands - his country of birth.

19-year-old Huijsen was born in April 2005 in Amsterdam, but moved to Spain aged 5. His father, Donny Huijsen, played for the likes of Ajax and HFC Haarlem before retiring in the late 1990s.

After representing the Netherlands at all youth levels, Huijsen chose to represent Spain at the highest level during his loan spell at AS Roma from Juventus. The defender has since moved to Bournemouth and debuted in the Spain squad last week.

"Apparently it was meant to be that I got to make my debut for Spain against the Netherlands," said Huijsen. "My family were in the stands. My father too. I think he also debuted for Ajax at De Kuip."

Huijsen replaced the injured Pau Cubarsi in the first half and got met by the home crowd with some loud booing. The youngster didn't care too much about the negative welcome, however.

"That's part of it. That's football. Apparently, they also appreciate me and regret that I didn't choose the Netherlands. So that's also kind of honourable."

The Netherlands and Spain drew 2-2 after Mikel Merino scored a late injury-time equaliser. The return of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final matchup will be played Sunday in Valencia's Estadio Mestalla.
